A High Brow Recital
On Wednesday 5 July, the Minstrels were invited to perform at St Luke’s Church in Eardley Road as part of the Sevenoaks Festival. The church holds free lunchtime recitals for local residents and people who work locally. The standard of those invited to perform is exceptionally high and we are very proud of the fact we are continually invited to perform.
External concerts are a great treat for our students and they look forward to performing to an even wider audience. The programme highlighted not just the high standard of singing we expect of the Minstrels but also their talents as individual musicians. Representing the talents of year 7 were Christopher Ford playing “The Pink Panther” on his Sax and Matthew English giving a rendition of “Lord of the Dance” on his Violin.
From year 8 Mia Bui and Lilli-Mae Williams were joined by their singing teacher Miss. Perry to solve the problem of “Maria” from the Sound of Music. Miss. Perry stepped in to replace Gabriella Granville who was sadly ill on the day of the concert.
From year 9 Minstrels Nathan Sparshott, George Dennett and Sam Paredes-Larson gave wonderful solos and duets. Nathan sang an aria from The Mikado called “Tit Willow” by Gilbert and Sullivan, George gave a haunting rendition of “The Swan” by Saint-Saens before teaming up with Sam to sing the duet “Guys and Dolls” from Guys and Dolls the musical.
Year 10 was represented by Emilia Pound, Megan Layton-Rees, Niki Oliva and Hannah Pitchford. Emilia sang a Grade 6 piece called Over the Mountains by Quilter before being joined by Megan to sing the beautiful Stabat Mater by Pergolesi. Niki gave a wonderful rendition of Memory from Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Cats the Musical. Hannah showed her versatility as a performer and sang a wonderful aria by Handel called “Art Thou Troubled?”.
All performers were ably accompanied by Carolyn Cabrera.
The concert was well attended by the public including Lady Sarah Gough which gave the scholarship singers in the Minstrels the chance to thank her for her wonderful donations and chat with her before the concert.
