Smile ... we are champions
Our Year 9 basketball team finished off a fantastic season with a convincing win over Skinners School in the district final to be crowned champions in 2017. After 3 years of finishing within the top 3 this year nothing but the top spot would do for the team led by Johnson A and Ewan G who have developed their skills playing for Sevenoaks Suns Basketball Club.
The Year 11 boys controversially missed out on winning their competition in a close game against Bennett Memorial School. After going down early in the first half, Knole came back to lead in the 4th quarter with some inspirational play from Callum V. With 4 seconds to play Bennett had a narrow 3 point lead but Knole had a timeout and an opportunity to make one more score to tie the game and force overtime. The play was drawn up and the ball fell into the hands of Johnson who was being marked by two men. He somehow managed to buy himself some space as he shot a 3 pointer. From the bench, I was sure Johnson was fouled but my protests fell on deaf ears as the referee waved it off and signalled the end of the game.
This was a frustrating loss for a group of boys who have improved so much over the past 2 years. It would have been such a fantastic way to finish their final year at the Academy, well played gents.
Basketball continues to go from strength to strength at Knole with large numbers attending the Monday lunch time club and Friday after school club.
