Staff v Students Red Nose Day Basketball Match
Students packed in to the sports hall today to watch an eagerly anticipated clash between staff and students, with all donations going to Comic Relief. The Year 11 team were quietly confident, having reached the final of the West Kent basketball competition. However, a strong staff team was always going to be hard to beat.
Early exchanges were tight and neither team were able to make a breakthrough. A foul in the act of shooting on Mr Massey led to the first points from the free throw line. With Mr Turner controlling the ball for the staff, his accurate passing made openings for the taller staff members such as Mr Ereaut and Mr White to finish off under the basket.
The student team kept in the game with some good under the basket work from Ryan G, Callum V and Scott S, ably assisted by Johnson A, who needed 3 staff members to mark him in order to prevent his dazzling dribbling and shooting skills from taking over the game.
Half time saw the staff lead 7 points to 2.
In the second half the bench players started and Mrs Sutcliffe showed some terrific shooting skills by bagging a 2 pointer and following up with a shot from the free throw line. The students hit back with a couple of good baskets and when the starters came back it was basket for basket going into the last 5 minutes; the staff were 2 points up, but it was too close for comfort. In the final minute Mr Ereaut used all his 6 foot plus height to nail a basket and the staff held out to win 14 points to 10.
Well done to the student team, a really good performance pushing the staff all the way.
Thanks must go to Beth E-D who did a great job of refereeing, especially when Mr Turner likes to play and referee the game himself.
